BIATHLON

Biathlon is the sport that combines precision shooting with cross-country skiing. Skiers use 22 caliber rifles and shoot at metal targets 50m away.

The competitor skis a loop and comes in for five shots then skis another loop. With total distance ranging from 3k for midgets up to 20 km for open men.

Under 15 year old competitors shoot only in the prone position but older competitors shoot half the time in the standing position.

With the addition of shooting, biathlon creates a combination that allows a sharp shooter to be as competitive as a fast skier. It develops a very strong athlete in both mind and body. It also is appealing to the master skier because of the precision shooting being an equalizer.

It is an exciting and challenging sport for skiers of all ages. Biathlon is a growing sport in Canada but is one of the most poplar winter sports in Europe. World cup competitions bring out over 40,000 spectators. North Americans are just discovering the appeal of this exciting sport.

BVCCSC has a small but active group of Biathletes. Our club offers a fun and competitive approach to the sport with a high level of safety training. We encourage the athlete that wants to ski and shoot for self improvement but also encourage national level competition.

The club owns a small number of rifles that are rented to starting athletes so they can experience the sport before purchasing their own rifle.

The biathlon group also is linked with the racing program so we have access to the club coach for help with skiing skills.
