Weather Information
Weather Updates
Data is recorded from the weather station at:
6:30 AM, 8:30 AM, 10:30 AM, 11:30 AM, 1:30 PM, 2:30 PM, 4:30 PM and 6:30 PM
Five to ten minutes after the data is recorded, a computer uploads the data over the lodge phone line to bvnordic.ca
Note to users of the lodge phone: If you need to use the lodge phone for an emergency while it is trying to upload, just keep trying every 15 to 30 seconds. Once you start using it, you will have priority over the computer.
Temperature Accuracy
The weather station temperature has been carefully calibrated but it sometimes seems to be warmer than that shown on the lodge’s glass thermometers. There are several potential reasons for this:
– Temperatures vary across the stadium area, especially the middle versus near the trees. There is also variation due to height above the ground.
– The glass thermometers can be colder because of a cold draft coming out of the nearby forest. The weather station is specially shielded from wind and from radiation loss/gain.
– The weather station’s snow-melting heater might be warming the temperature sensor – sometimes by up to 2 degrees.
The position of the snow-melting heater is being looked at. Until that issue is resolved, come prepared for a bit colder than what is shown on the website.
Wind Chill
The wind chill is calculated based on the Osczevski (1995) equation which was adopted by the US National Weather Service in 2001.
Sometimes snow will build up and prevent the wind cups from turning.
