HISTORIC NEWS FLASH
19th Annual BV MARATHON (2006)
On freshly groomed tracks in new snow, under broken cloud at minus 3 degrees, 139 participants embarked upon the Ski Marathon distance of their choice at the BV Nordic Centre on Saturday March 4th, 2006.
Supported by 60 volunteers, who made the experience very special, the skiers were treated to warm drinks, fig newtons and jelly beans along the way, a collectors pin and badge at the finish, lunch and later, the wind-up Banquet.
A waxing bar at the lap lane assisted those who needed a touch-up on their ski bases, and lots of encouragement along the way, both on the ground and from the helicopter in the sky made for a memorable contest. Skiers came from 100 Mile House, Prince George, Burns Lake, and Kitimat to join the locals on the trails. It took over 5 hours for all skiers to complete their chosen route.
It was an exciting race for the cash prize in the Big 51 km. Peter Krause of Smithers was matched stride for stride by Prince Geroge’s Nikki Kassel representing the UNBC ski team. Neck and neck starting the second lap, he only had her by 38 seconds at the finish line, and missed breaking 3 hours by just 6 seconds. After Nikki Kassel (3:00.44), the 2nd woman to complete the 51 km was Teresa White (3:24.35) BV, and 3rd (3:40.35) Barb Sharp from Prince George.
Amongst the men, 2nd place (3:06.56) went to Chris Paulson of the Omineca Ski Club from Burns Lake, and 3rd (3:08.37) across the line was Greg Brown of the home BV club.
In the Marathon distance of 34 km, Larry McCulloch was the fastest male (2:08.57) second was young Gavin Mitchell (2:19.09) and third younger Steven Hollenberg (2:22.57).
This 34 km contest for the women was won by Tenley Dahlie (2:25.41) second Liz Holdyk (2:34.11) and third Irene Ronalds (2:37.54) all from the Bulkley Valley Cross Country Ski Club.
